Criteria
Retrieves information from text
ExceedingLocates and quotes specific details from multiple parts of the text accurately and independently.
MeetingFinds most key details from the text with minor errors or omissions.
ApproachingLocates some information from the text with support or re-reading.
BeginningNeeds significant guidance to locate information; often selects irrelevant details.
Makes inferences and draws conclusions
ExceedingMakes well-reasoned inferences beyond the text, linking clues and prior knowledge to explain thinking.
MeetingMakes reasonable inferences with some explanation, though justification may be implicit.
ApproachingMakes simple inferences (e.g. character feelings) with prompting.
BeginningRetells rather than infers; struggles to read between the lines.
Uses vocabulary knowledge
ExceedingUses context and word structure to work out unfamiliar words and explains meaning in own words.
MeetingUses context clues to understand most unfamiliar words; meaning is generally accurate.
ApproachingAttempts to use context but sometimes chooses an incorrect or imprecise meaning.
BeginningSkips unfamiliar words or guesses without using context.
Responds personally to text
ExceedingShares a thoughtful personal response, connecting the text to own experience or other texts with reasons.
MeetingGives a personal opinion with a reason, though the connection to the text could be more specific.
ApproachingExpresses a preference or reaction (e.g. 'I liked it') with limited justification.
BeginningGives minimal response and struggles to articulate why the text interested them.
