Develops a clear argument
ExcellenceArgument is consistently clear and well-developed with three or more strong reasons, each supported by specific examples.
MeritArgument is mostly clear with two or three supporting reasons, though some lack specific examples.
AchievedArgument is identifiable and supported by at least one reason, though development is limited.
Engages the intended audience
ExcellenceUses sophisticated rhetorical techniques (rhetorical questions, emotive language, direct address) consistently throughout.
MeritUses some rhetorical techniques effectively, holding the reader's interest for most of the piece.
AchievedShows awareness of the reader through occasional techniques such as direct address or vivid description.
Structures the writing effectively
ExcellenceStrong opening hook, logical paragraph progression, and a memorable conclusion that reinforces the argument.
MeritClear opening and closing, with paragraphs that mostly flow logically.
AchievedHas an introduction, body, and conclusion, though paragraph transitions may be uneven.
Uses language accurately and effectively
ExcellenceVaried vocabulary, accurate spelling and punctuation, and deliberate stylistic choices throughout.
MeritMostly accurate spelling and grammar, with some evidence of deliberate word choice.
AchievedGenerally accurate basic spelling and punctuation; vocabulary is functional if simple.
