AchievedHas a basic grasp of what needs to be found but may miss key constraints or misinterpret some information.
Selects and uses an appropriate strategy
ExcellenceChooses an efficient strategy for the problem type (e.g. algebraic, systematic listing, visualising) and applies it flexibly.
MeritChooses a valid strategy and applies it consistently, though a more efficient approach may exist.
AchievedAttempts a strategy that could work but applies it inconsistently or partially.
Calculates accurately
ExcellenceAll calculations are correct; working is shown clearly, including units and final statement of answer.
MeritMost calculations are correct; minor arithmetic slips may occur but do not derail the solution.
AchievedKey steps are attempted but errors in calculation affect the final answer.
Communicates reasoning
ExcellenceReasoning is explained step by step in clear mathematical language; another student could follow and verify the solution.
